My Love Affair With Jumpsuits

If someone forced me at gunpoint to name the one article of clothing I would keep in a fire above all others, it would be a jumpsuit. Take a peek in my wardrobe and you'll see an alarming number of them, all in their no-muss no-fuss glory. See, the beauty of a jumpsuit is that you put exactly 0% thought into your outfit, and on some days that's about what I have left to give. Another huge plus is versatility. I have worn a jumpsuit with heels and statement earrings for a double date, and then with rolled up hems and my favorite off-white Reeboks for a lazy Sunday and guess what...it. all. worked.

I can trace the allure of jumpsuits for me to a very specific period in my life and that, my friends, is the summer I discovered the cinematic masterpiece Space Camp. I cannot even begin to tell you how obsessed I was. If you haven't seen it, it's a very plausible movie about a bunch of youngsters and their sternly capable instructor getting ACCIDENTALLY LAUNCHED INTO SPACE BY A WELL-MEANING ROBOT. It was filmic gold and I wanted so badly to be a member of that ragtag team, wearing the iconic blue NASA jumpsuit and steering us safely through orbit & re-entry. I mean seriously, how would you not want to be a part of this:

You're not convinced? "I'm afraid I'm going to look like an extra from Top Gun," you fret? That's a negative, Ghost Rider. With the right accessories a good jumpsuit is charming & stylish (unless your accessories are a helmet & traffic batons, in which case yes, you might read more "aircraft carrier personnel" than "stroll through the farmer's market").

If you're still on the fence, allow me to provide some visual incentive. Here are a few of the jumpsuits I own, alongside photos of them out in the wild:

And here are some that I (regretfully) do not own but wish I did:

That last green leather one makes me want to cry actual, salty tears of longing.
